The People’s Flag – a flag to represent the English People

Our election campaign adopted a battle flag. This can be seen on the home page of the website. However we saw this as a “People’s Flag not a Party Flag. It was a flag that can represent a new England yet to be born. It is the kind of flag which a popular democratic movement might adopt. The slogan “Banksters versus People” is thus matched with a flag.

The Peoples Flag is a tricolour. This connects with the UK’s two neighbours, Ireland and France who both fly tricolours. This is a secular and republican flag and points to a future England founded on the sovereignty of the people. The three vertical stripes stand for a society which values liberty, equality and solidarity.

The red stripe stands for the workers who produce the wealth, and the social dimension. The purple or lilac stands for women’s equality, which should represent equality for all. The green stands for the global dimension and the future of the planet. England like the language is internationalist and not some ‘Little Englander’ national chauvinism.

The historical roots of this flag go back to the Levellers, the democratic party of the English revolution. Levellers formed the most advanced pro-democratic wing in the New Model Army. Their colour was sea green. The tricolour connects with the Chartist flag (red white and green) and the suffragettes flag (green, purple and white). The colours identify with the most important  popular struggles that have shaped our parliamentary democracy.

The traditional flags of old England are the union flag and the flag of St George. Taken together they are the flags of the British-English. We see this flags flown on official occasions and on public buildings. The Union flag stands for the monarchy, Empire and the union of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. In a country “owned” by the banks the Union flag is their flag. It symbolises the rule of the “Banksters”.  In Bermondsey the BNP waving this flag, as if claiming to be the true bankster party. This annoys the other bankster parties disgusted to find the BNP flying the same flag as them.
